There was a time when Farm and Forge were not the separate and dwindling things they are today. Just about every farm had a forge and just about every farmer was a resourceful blacksmith. I enjoy general blacksmithing, but my real love is bladesmithing.
Unlike most imported knives, swords, and other blades; I do not work with stainless steel. I use only high carbon and tool steels. So-called stainless steel does have its place in the world of quality blades. It’s just not my thing.
Unlike most knife and blade makers, I take no joy in using the stock removal method and only use it for finishing work. Truth be known, just about all except the most primitive blades involve some stock removal in their creation. The difference between forging and stock removal is a question of how much stock removal was used. The overwhelming majority of my shaping is done with hammer and anvil. Like stainless steel, stock removal does have its place in the world of quality blades. But it too is not my thing.
I enjoy the transformative nature of fire and the feeling of moving metal under my hammer. Although the forge and foundry is a definite part of our business, I generally do not forge for money. Getting a custom piece out of my forge is like pulling teeth because I would much rather be dancing to my own drum beat and hope someone thinks my music is good enough to purchase. I do sell my creations, but I don’t create them for the primary purpose of making money. I forge because doing so is in my blood. I see a blade or other forged item in my mind and I have to bring it into existence.
