Goats

About our buck from Papa Attitude:

They say a dog is man’s best friend but I prefer my alpine goat buck.  We’ve been together since his birth when he rejected his mother’s teats in favor of my bottle.  He’s not a wether because we planned him as a stud.  He’s not dehorned because I didn’t have the heart to do it.  Although this is reportedly a horrible combination, his aggression towards me is almost non-existent even when he is in rut.  The same is not true of other visitors so he is all my responsibility.

About our does.

We are a tiny dairy operation, so we can do it the old fashion way.  You won’t find an automatic milker anywhere on the farm.  Instead we milk each morning and evening by hand and have discovered this promotes a closer relationship between our goat and human family.

Our girls are also Alpines and consist of his partner (yes, they are monogamous), his mother, and his sister.  We are currently looking for another buck to breed with his mother and sister, but it will be a while before we are ready because we are planning to strive for the same temperament as our one buck by bottle feeding him and treating him with great amounts of attention like our first buck.

Our goats are for our own dairy purposes.  Because they have to be refreshed / bred every couple of years, we imagine we might one day be forced to part with a few but we do not intend to ever sell them for meat purposes.  We hope that by raising them for the right temperament they will make fine pets even if we have to part with them one day.
