Goat Milk
From our Goats & Sheep
The first thing we do every morning is milk our goats. The last thing we do every night is milk our goats. Yes, I did say goats. Soon we will be milking sheep too.
The United States of America is one of the few countries where milk products are more likely to come from a cow than a goat. While few people realize this, chances are great you have already had goat milk cheese. If you’ve ever eaten feta cheese, chances are it was made with as much as 30% goat milk. But don’t think for a moment that the other 70% came from a cow. To be considered a true feta cheese, it must be made from 70% or more sheep’s milk. Goat’s milk is often used to lower cost. Although goat milk is much higher in price than cow’s milk, it is not nearly as expensive as sheep’s milk.
At this time, we are in our experimenting stages so we haven’t attempted to acquire the necessary permits to market our milk products. Until that time, you are welcome to enjoy the company of our goats and sheep during one of our open houses. But enjoying anything else that comes from them will have to wait till the herd is larger, the recipes have been established, and the certification is on the wall.
