“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.” – Genesis 1:26

Virtually every religion has indicated there is a difference between humanity and all other living creatures of this earth. Bad Attitude Farm and Forge LLC draws its name from the simple belief that this dominion does not amount to the right to torture, abuse and rape that which we have dominion over. As God has dominion over man, as adults have dominion over their children, we believe humanity has dominion over this earth and all of her critters to be the earth and its critter’s caretaker.
Our “Bad Attitude” comes from how we feel about people who think the word dominion is a license to rape our earth and abuse her critters.
Our animals and poultry are treated with love, respect, and kindness. Our four legged lawn mowers (goats) are raised for milk. Our ducks and chicken are raised for eggs. Our sheep are raised for fiber. Although we have no objection to hunting or the humane production of meat products, we are a no kill farm for deeply felt personal beliefs. Papa Attitude, the farm’s patriarch, has been a vegetarian for over two decades.
Produce – Wherever possible, we grow only heritage crops without the use of pesticides. Instead of harsh chemicals, we allow our flocks to stand guard over our fields ever alert to those things gardeners call pests and poultry call lunch.
Water – Because we use no pesticides, we are able to reuse much of the water which falls on our crops and other portion of our property. Each of our raised beds is flanked by drainage channels, which route the water back to our pond area. Each building’s down spout does the same. Within the year, we will probably complete work on our water purification system.
Eggs – Our eggs come in a variety of sizes and colors. White, blue, green, pink, and of course white. What each has in common is an organically fed free ranging hen that is free from growth hormones, antibiotics, or any form of treated grains. Our free ranging flocks do not consist of roosters because fertility decreases the time an egg will keep.
Fertile Eggs – Our breeding flocks are kept separate from our laying stock. Each breed has a spacious indoor area attached to a large run. Unlike our free ranging flocks, our breeding flocks are fed a special diet formulated to insure the health of the chicks rather than the flavor of the egg.
Peeps / Chicks – We use a common sense approach to raising chicks. This includes medication when needed, however all medication is discontinued before a bird is introduced to either our free-range flocks (eating egg producers) or our breeding flocks (fertile / hatching eggs).
Our goal is to provide for our family while establishing a sustainable homestead. It is our hope that by making the decisions we do now, our children and their children will never want for food or shelter.
