Planting Eggs
In our links / other places section, you’ll see a link to Rose Creek Creations and Rose Creek Cattle Company. One of the owners (Angela) and I met on Craigs List. She was asking for help with a ceramic kiln. I gave what advice I could. Now a days, she gives me a lot more advice than I have to offer in exchange. Yesterday’s advice saves money and buys the Styrofoam incubator at Tractor Supply. She also suggested purchasing the automatic egg turner. I was skeptical at first, but her flocks seem to be health, happy, and growing; so I figured like her other advice it was sound. I just unpacked the Little Giant Air Incubator ($41.99) and the optional automatic egg turner (another $41.99).

Reading the instructions, I found it does not have a thermostat. Instead, it has a variable temperature heating element, rheostat and a thermometer. So instead of setting a temperature and letting it warm up like the more expensive self-regulating models, you have to play with the rheostat setting until you find the right one for your room temperature. Basically, turn the knob clockwise to raise the temperature and counter clockwise to lower the temperature. In a colder room, it requires more heat. In a warm room, it requires less heat. As a result of changing temperatures out side, we have again broken our rule about animals being kept indoors.
My daughter and I assembled the thing and plugged it in where it won’t be disturbed. Assembly wasn’t a chore at all. Just line up the cord from the egg turner with the slot in the incubator and slide it into place. Although she desperately wanted to put the eggs into the incubator immediately, we decided it would be best to follow the directions and wait till we can establish a stable temperature. Tomorrow’s lesson at Daddy School will be how to “plant” our eggs.
