Cloning and Marijuana

Cloning and Marijuana – You will note the title of this rant is not “Cloning Marijuana”.  The -and- in there makes a big difference doesn’t it?

With all the public outcry about genetically engineered food, I should probably avoid using the term “cloning” to describe propagating plants for human consumption.  The thing is, it is the best word to describe the process as it produces a new plant which is genetically identical to the original plant.  For those of you who haven’t already stopped reading, when it comes to plants like strawberry, raspberry, blackberry and similar plants; cloning is often how Mother Nature reproduces the plants herself.

The blackberry is a great example.  One of the ways it spreads itself naturally is by bending a living tip to the ground.  When it comes in contact with moist soil, the tip will spread its own roots.  Eventually, the connection to he original plant will wither and a naturally occurring close is born. I suppose when the plant does it on its own, we should call it asexual reproduction and when a human does it, it is called cloning.

So I have decided to make some clones and needed a few things for the process.  Living out in the middle of the hills, Internet shopping and UPS are great resources.  First to the Internet shopping part of my cloning project.  Time to find supplies.  I head on over to google.com and type in a few key words.  Presto: everything I have ever wanted to know about growing marijuana in my basement.  Uh what?

Now don’t get me wrong.  I have nothing against marijuana other than it being illegal.  I like to explain my feelings on the subject by saying I am allergic.  Not to the plant but to the men in black who carry machine guns and look for the stuff.  So if you are growing it, don’t let me know.  It is not my preference but I don’t think it is nearly as harmful as some of the things I do to my body which are legal.

The point of this rant is that it just seems odd that the majority of web sites which are dedicated to providing more than the very basic growing supplies seem tailor maid to the marijuana industry.  Then it occurred to me, one of the largest home based businesses during the Great Depression was bootleg whiskey and moonshine.  I think the proliferation of the home based marijuana industry is a sign of the times.  Yes, it is illegal but what wouldn’t a person do to survive and put food on the table.

Fortunately, the method we chose to survive these times doesn’t attract those men in black.
