Bertie Goat
Meet Bertie, one of our first goats. We bought her as a pregnant yearling. In February of this year, she gave birth to two kids; one boy (Schmied) and one girl (Bella). Unfortunately, we weren’t there to witness the birth, so I can’t offer photos.
We let Bella nurse on Bertie for the first couple of weeks so she would get the colostrum. Colostrum is the first milk produced by a mother. It contains an immune system booster, which greatly improves health and development of a baby. After two weeks, we tried to separate them and bottle feed baby Bella but neither Bertie nor Bella would have it. As a result of allowing Bella to nurse for so long, Bertie hasn’t developed into much of a milker.
We plan to refresh / breed her soon and hope not to give in again. Her other child, Schmied, was bottle-fed from birth. He has developed fine despite both colostrum and milk going from utter to bottle to mouth.
